History of IsRoil Olive Oil:
Late 1800's:
My ancestors had emmigrated to the United States in the later part of the 1800s. Historical family names included: Haviland, Kaufman, Rao, Shoppe, Berg, Leach, Clyberg, and Olsson. Stubborn, honest, and thrifty are three adjectives that come to mind when imagining what they might have been like.
1904 - 1972:
My greatgrandmother Eva was born in 1904 and of course grew up during the great depression. She got married and had 8 healthy children. That side of the family made their bones during prohibition as my great bubbe Eva got her start selling alcohol when alcohol was at its most profitable point in history, they obviously made a few humble dollars during the great depression, at least enough to start some taverns and restauraunts in Minnesota. My family has had bars, restaurants and nightclubs from the 1930's until 2006.
1972-1990:
I was born in 1972 and grew up an only child. My mother was a high fashion model in NYC and my father a real estate developer in Minnesota. My mother worked for the late notorious horsetrainer "Harold Buddy Jacobson" She lived in his penthouse in Manhattan. Her name is Dawn Eve and she modeled with Cheryl Teigs, Melanie Cain, etc and she eventually assisted Jodie Fosters rise to stardom as she was offered the lead supporting actress role in a Movie called "Taxi Driver" with Robert D'Niro and she turned it down and it ended up being the movie that really propeled Jodie Foster's career.
1990-1999
In 1990 I entered business school and graduated in 1993. When I graduated business school I was so eager to conquer the world yet so niave. My first job out of college was selling cars at Grossman Chevrolet. I was excited to be working for a company that has been in business since 1919 in fact I was so excited that I would ride the elavators up and down the world trade center in Saint Paul and pass out business cards to a captive audience in the elavator. I look back and think WOW!!! What the hell was I doing. (I think that every real business person gets excited with his or her first box of business cards and if not I would probably be scared to hire that type of person) I sold cars until 1998 when I did a crazy think and moved to Venezuela to teach English. I was tired of the rat race and wanted a change of pace yet more importantly I was searching for a cultural learning experience. I had a great time teaching English at: U.L.A. "Universidad de Los Andes" in Merida Venezuela but living on $200. per month quickly made me realize how much I missed the rat race and how much I love the United States so I returned to the U.S. in 1999.
1999-2006
I returned to the US just after my mother had purchased a nightclub. I was helping her to redesign the club and I was actually living in a loft within the club. There was not much in the loft apart from a few books. One of the books was an original 1963 softcover copy of The Godfather. I started reading it and could not put it down. I read it for three days. I think it was the fastest that I had ever read a book that thick. The Godfather was in the olive oil importing business and in the back of my head I thought: "What a perfect business, ... olive oil importing" (I never thought that it would eventually become reality one day but it did) Shortly thereafter a thought came to mind: Minnesota is home to about five Hispanic newspapers and a Jewish newspaper and magazine and even a Vietnamese newspaper. I then thought: There are more Italian restaurants around than any other type and ALL of the nationalities, religions and ethnicities love Italian culture, food, fashion, arts, entertainment etc so I launched Mondo Italiano Newspaper. After publishing this newspaper for a couple of years I realized that I had free advertising available and technically could branch off into that olive oil business that the Godfather inspired in me. I did, I decided to do a Sicilian olive oil a truffle oil and an Israeli olive oil. The names came to me for the first two oils but I was perplexed as to what I should name the Israeli oil, I even remember telling several friends that because Israel is such a perfect country I have to come up with THE MOST PERFECT NAME!!! I decided to meditate for six hours at a desk. I was so determined that I was not even willing to go to the bathroom or anything, I was GOING to name IsRoil and that is all there was to it. Thank G-d it did not take six hours, it took less than 15 or 20 minutes. The letters came to me is r oil IsRoil. When I saw those letters I jumped in the air soooo high that my 6'3" body almost hit the ceiling. Right then and there I went to the USPTO website to register the trademark. I had found my G-d chosen career and I hope that if you are reading this you will become part of it by adopting IsRoil as your favorite brand. From Godfather to G-d. How do you like those olives? Do it now, do it often and enjoy IsRoil Brand.
Sincerely,
Jay Iaco Shapiro
