His movie, a take-off on the 1957 jury-room film drama "Twelve Angry Men," stars Mason as the holdout juror who in a bit of a twist on the plot of the original movie thinks the boy on trial for the murder is guilty.
Don't worry, "One Angry Man," as expected, is almost all comedy and very little drama. The movie begins with a hilarious scene in which Mason, who is preparing for the opening of his Broadway show, comes up with a last-ditch idea to get out of jury duty after his lawyer, played by real-life New York attorney Raul Felder, is unable, through his contacts, to get Mason excused.
"I'll make myself so obnoxious and disgusting that they'll get rid of me," Mason says.
The prosecutor has no problem with the comic being on the jury, but confidently says Mason will never be selected.
In the movie's funniest scene, Mason is chosen by the defense attorney to be on the jury.
Cut to the jury room with a comical collection of jurors who are stereotypes right out of one of Mason's stand-up comedy performances. Each dislikes Mason from the start. And in dialogue reminiscent of parts of his act, the comic does little to change their minds.
Thanks to Mason's antics, chaos ensues in the jury room. Mason, the hold-out juror who thinks that the Arab boy named Yusef is guilty for killing a DEA agent, tries to change his fellow jurors' minds. We learn about the jurors' lives and prejudices. Mason ridicules them. He has a wonderful time in particular with the self-hating Jew and his WASP name (Campbell Davidson) and attire (brown shoes with white socks).
It's all vintage Mason, lifted from the 74-year-old comic's stand-up act. So if you like Jackie Mason, you probably will like the movie. While there are not a lot of big laughs, "One Angry Man" is a pleasant enough movie and a nice way to spend about 90 minutes.
James Felder, Raoul Felder's son, wrote the screenplay for the movie with Mark Dickerman. Dickerman's instinct and their goal, Felder wrote in an e-mail, "was to dramatize that there was something deeper and more humane to Jackie's humor. The movie was designed to compliment, not copy, what he does on stage."
Mason was smart about the story, Dickerman wrote in an e-mail. "He knew when to go to town with a joke and when to be serious. Working with him was always interesting."
In an e-mail interview last week Mason talked about his long career. The highlights, he wrote, were performing six times for the royal family of England and being honored at Oxford University with his own chair in Jewish studies.
Asked about the state of comedy today, Mason said, "I think there is too much filth, which is sad because there are some good comics around. I also feel the liberal comics are so angry that they have become downright mean and hateful."
Mason said he likes comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Jeffrey Ross. "The best and my very favorite was George Carlin, God rest his soul. He was a genius."
